It's completely free, and gets on and does the job simply in the background. Much less annoying than the anti-virus software you get bundled with home PCs. These have bells and whistles that you don't need, get in the way, and keep nagging you to renew them.

Thanks Nick, I agree. However, it is essential that you remove your old antivirus program before installing Security Essentials.
Having two antivirus programs at once causes problems such as slowing down and freezing up. -

I would definitely agree that Security Essentials is the best option for Windows PCs for on the fly protection. I would also particularly advise against any Norton products as they are often expensive and annoying to use. We also encounter many problems with Norton, for example Norton 360 frequently disables the internet connection if your subscription runs out!
For one off virus removal try a scan with Malwarebytes. But remember it doesn't run in the background like Security Essentials. -

Worked for me too - combination of the 2 mentioned above (Malwarebytes & Security Essentials) cleaned my system where others had failed. Also can't see why you should pay for antivirus software that doesn't seem to detect viruses on your PC...
