Error 619 when connecting to VPN
what is an error 619 when connecting to bristol VPN?
-
Error 619 means a connection between your computer and our VPN server couldn't be established. It might mean a firewall, a broken Internet connection at your end, or your Internet provider blocking it.

how do i solve this then as i really need to use a program fromt he veterinary department and i can only get on it if i have the VPN?? is there someone i can bring my laptop to or can u help on here?

It's really difficult to know the exact cause. If you can supply the following information, I might be able to guess at the cause...
- Which firewall software are you using? Windows Firewall, Norton Internet Security, McAfee, some other.
- Which make and model of router do you have?
- Which Internet provider do you have?

I also have this problem. However I have been able to use the VPN on my laptop previously through the internet in my student house, this is a recent problem for me. Also my housemate is able to connect to the VPN. Therefore I am assuming the problem is not in my router!
I use a Zone Alarm firewall. But have not changed any settings since I was allowed on (that I am aware of...). I am really confused as to what the problem may be. -
-
Hi Katy. Are you and your housemate trying to access the VPN at the same time? Some routers only allow one VPN connection to be made simultaneously, which is a pain.
Zone Alarm can work with the VPN but it's not a great firewall product. We would normally recommend that users remove ZA and revert to the standard Windows firewall which offers more straightforward protection (how often does ZA give you a popup question that you don't understand?!). The built-in Windows firewall works with the VPN without you having to make any changes.-
OK, I have uninstalled ZA and restarted my computer, but the VPN is still coming up with the same error.
We are not always on simultaneously, for example no-one else is in my house now but it's still not working. -

Hi Jonathan, I have the same problem! I am running Windows 7 64 bit, have norton internet security 2011, D-link 615 router and Virgin Media BB (they supplied the router!). Any help would be much appreciated. Cheers!

Try removing Norton and replacing it with Microsoft Security Essentials (which is free). Not only do you not have to pay to extend your subscription, MSSE works properly, doesn't slow your computer down so much, and doesn't interfere so much with your system. Norton is truly terrible.

To eliminate the problem of security software I have tried setting it up with mac snow leopard 10.6.6. It connected only 1 time out of 5 attempts (also your instructions on your website explaining the process for mac are out dated!). Note also I did not change any settings between attempts.
That eliminates the security software and the router/ our internet connection. As a side - norton previously has been awful but they have since improved it, it is now a which best buy and I have not noticed any effect on my computers performance, or stuff being blocked like ZA or AVG.
Any other ideas!?
Thanks for your help -

Hi Jonathan. I also have this same problem.
I was able to connect previously on my old laptop (i think it was XP) but now I have a new laptop on Windows 7 (64bit). Ive installed the VPN program but i get a 619 error message when I try to connect.
I dont have any extra protection on my laptop - apart from Windows 7 firewall etc.
Whats the best action to take to try and resolve this.
Many thanks.-
Ive spent some time disabling firewalls, and opening ports but no luck. I believe it maybe to do with the router not allowing VPN to work? I have a DLink DIR 615. Is there a port opening process I can carry out or something like that?
Thanks again. -

Paul, I have had it working (once) using mac osx and a dlink 615 - standard setup, didnt have to open any ports!

Same exact problem, and it doesn't seem like there is a clear solution. I have basically the same exact set-up as Paul and Thomas. DLink DIR 615 supplied by Virgin, Windows 7, spyware Doctor anti-virus, windows firewall. The VPN works sometimes and sometimes it doesn't. I had a good streak going last week where I got it to work 3 or 4 days in a row (sometimes after a couple attempts). Today, no matter what it doesn't seem to want to connect. This is rather frustrating on my end as well.

Hi Jonathan - hope you're well.
I'm doing some freelance work for the Uni and need to connect to the VPN. I'ts been okay for the past year, but as of last week, I get an error 619 on both of our laptops. Nothing has changed (Win 7, Microsoft Firewall etc.), so I assume it's the Virgin 'superhub'. I've contacted Virgin without joy... any ideas?
Thanks in advance

Hmm, the Virgin SuperHub is actually a super pain in the arse. I vaguely recall that if you dig through the settings there is something called "VPN passthrough" or "PPTP passthrough". Can you see anything like that on yours?

Thanks for your quick reply... I've checked connection settings and network devices but can't find this option. The odd thing its that it suddenly happened last week - I've been okay up until then.

1According to the Interwebs: "the Virgin SuperHub has an option for PPTP VPN Pass Through under the Content Filter settings". Can you check to see if yours has this? -

Thanks very much Jonathan! I wasted half an hour on the phone yesterday ;-) I've found and enabled it and can now log in.

Hi Jonathan
Just wondering if you could put my mind at rest: In addition to working from home, I'm using BT Openzone from my office, going via the Uni VPN for my freelance work. As Openzone has security issues, they offer their own but state that it won't work if another is installed. Is it okay for me to use the UoB VPN to make online payments?
Thanks again

1The UoB VPN is "reasonably secure" and no more or less suitable for making online payments then a general home broadband connection. The UoB VPN is encrypted, but in any case any vendor offering online payments should have their own website encryption.
And for what it's worth, you should be able to have two VPNs installed on the same computer, you just can't connect to both simultaneously. I think BT are just being overly cautious when they say this isn't possible.
Hope this helps,

Hi Everyone (but mainly Jonathan - hopefully you are still following this thread).
I am having the same problem with connection error 619. I am using a Thomson 585v7 router, and I have had a look through all my router settings but couldn't find anything to allow my router to use VPN or allow PPTP passthrough. I did some googling and found that there is a way to get the 585v7 to do this by either changing some nat.ini file, but I thought I should probably ask for some professional advice first.
Thanks
